ABA Welcomes Two New Directors to the BoardFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Raleigh, N.C. (Feb. 26, 2020) – We are pleased to announce the elections of Stacie G. Deiner, M.D., and John E. Fiadjoe, M.D., to our Board of Directors. Drs. Deiner and Fiadjoe will officially begin their terms as directors following the Fall 2020 Board meeting.

“Drs. Deiner and Fiadjoe bring to our Board tremendous experience in our specialty and subspecialties that will broaden the scope of our work to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology,” said ABA Secretary David O. Warner, M.D. “The diversity of their practices and professional pursuits also speaks to our Board’s commitment to cultivating a progressive future vision for the ABA.”

Dr. Deiner specializes in neuroanesthesia and is a professor of anesthesiology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. She previously served as professor of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine, neurosurgery, and geriatrics and palliative medicine, vice-chair for research, and neuroanesthesia division head at Icahn School of Medicine in New York. Dr. Deiner currently serves the ABA as an examiner, a member of the Standardized

Oral Examination Committee and a non-director member of the Research Committee. Following the Board’s fall meeting, she will continue her work as a director member of the ABA’s Research Committee and will join the Board’s Assessments Committee.

Dr. Deiner earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and her doctor of medicine degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She holds ABA certification in anesthesiology (2005) and participates in MOCA 2.0® to maintain her certification.

She lives in New York with her husband and fellow bluegrass musician, Mark, and son Billy. She is an avid runner and reader.

Dr. Fiadjoe serves as associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he specializes in pediatric anesthesia and critical care medicine. At Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP), Dr. Fiadjoe is co-chair of the Difficult Airway Committee, chair of the Airway Program and a member of numerous committees and councils focused on research and pediatric anesthesiology.

He serves on the Board of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia and was a founding member and previous chair of the pediatric difficult intubation collaborative group. He currently serves the ABA as an examiner. As a director, he will serve on the Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, and Political Factors (STEEP) Advisory Committee and on the Credentialing and Continuing Certification Committee.

Dr. Fiadjoe earned his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in biomedical and electrical engineering and his doctor of medicine degree from Northwestern University. He is board-certified in anesthesiology (2005), holds a subspecialty certification in pediatric anesthesiology (2014) and participates in MOCA 2.0.

He is a cycling and tennis enthusiast and lives in Philadelphia with his wife and two daughters.

Drs. Deiner and Fiadjoe replace Brenda G. Fahy, M.D., and Daniel J. Cole, M.D., whose tenure on the Board ends at the conclusion of the Fall 2020 Board meeting. Dr. Cole will remain active with the Board as its Executive Director of Professional Affairs.

The election of Drs. Deiner and Fiadjoe signifies the beginning of the 12-year surge, a period where six new directors are elected to the Board over the course of three years. Between 2020-2022, two new directors will be elected each year, ultimately replacing six of the incumbent directors by the end of 2022.

The Joint Committee – made up of leaders from the ABA, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), and the American Medical Association (AMA) – selects nominees for ABA directorship and the ABA Board of Directors then selects its new directors.
