The American Board of Anesthesiology examines and certifies physicians
who complete an accredited program of anesthesiology training in the United States and voluntarily
apply to the Board for certification or maintenance of certification.
Our mission is to maintain the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology and to serve
the public, medical profession and health care facilities and organizations.
Professional Organizations
The American Society of Anesthesiologists is an educational,
research and scientific association of physicians organized to raise and
maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve
the care of the patient.
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a not-for-profit
organization, assists 24 approved medical specialty boards in the development
and use of standards in the ongoing evaluation and certification of physicians.
ABMS, recognized as the "gold standard" in physician certification, believes
higher standards for physicians means better care for patients
The NBME is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides
high-quality examinations for the health professions. Protection of the health of
the public through state of the art assessment of health professionals is the mission
of the NBME, along with a major commitment to research and development in evaluation
and measurement.
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is responsible
for the Accreditation of post-MD medical training programs within the United States.
Accreditation is accomplished through a peer review process and is based upon established
standards and guidelines.
