BOARD APPROVES 2022 APPLIED EXAM RETURN TO RALEIGH

Directors cite vaccine availability, lifting of travel restrictions and enhanced AIME Center safety protocols in return to face-to-face exams

Raleigh, N.C. (May 5, 2021) The American Board of Anesthesiology plans to administer the 2022 APPLIED Examination in-person at its assessment center, The AIME Center, in Raleigh starting in February 2022. The Board’s decision is another milestone in a gradual return to post-pandemic normalcy for a specialty in which many physicians have faced significant challenges providing care for COVID-19’s sickest patients.

In the meantime, the ABA will proceed with virtual exams for candidates whose APPLIED Exams are scheduled to take place from July to November 2021. The ABA’s temporary transition to virtual exams in 2021 is allowing approximately 3,000 anesthesiologists to complete certification this year, avoiding further delays in their professional advancement caused by COVID-19 disruptions.

“The Board is grateful to our candidates and volunteers for the incredible patience, professionalism, and perseverance they’ve displayed over the past year as we worked to weather the pandemic,” said Board Secretary David O. Warner, M.D. “We’re hopeful that 2022 will bring us back together in better days and better health for the betterment of our specialty and the patients we serve.”

Candidates who pass the ADVANCED Exam in 2021 will register for 2022 APPLIED Exam appointments in late summer. For answers to frequently asked questions on APPLIED Exam policies and onsite health and safety protocols for The AIME Center.
