Sleep medicine

Diagnosing and treating a variety of sleep disturbances and disorders

Connecting sleep medicine and anesthesiology

Since 2011, the ABA has offered certification in sleep medicine (SM), a subspecialty caring for patients with sleep problems and specific sleep disorders.

Sleep medicine encompasses a multidisciplinary body of knowledge regarding the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathophysiology and pharmacology of sleep and wakefulness and their disorders.

Maintenance of Certification

More from ABIM

The SM exam is administered by ABIM; therefore, the ABA does not offer MOCA Minute questions covering sleep medicine. ABIM provides two options for maintaining your SM subspecialty certification: a recertification exam or Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA)

If you’re already certified in sleep medicine, you can take the SM Recertification Exam once in your 10-year MOCA cycle to maintain your subspecialty certification.
