ABA Embarks on Implementation of Five-Year Strategic Plan
A message from ABA Secretary John E. Fiadjoe, M.D.:
The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) is pleased to announce our new five-year strategic plan. You can view our strategic plan here.
Looking ahead to the rapidly evolving landscape of medicine, with its technological advances and changing workforce needs, we recognize the importance of agility in transforming certification and shaping the future of anesthesiology. Our strategic plan, built on the pillars of our mission and vision, ensures that the ABA remains focused on patient safety while driving innovation. We aim to be a trusted partner to board-certified anesthesiologists and the organizations that support them.
We began working on the plan in spring 2023 and approved the final plan during our Fall 2024 Board of Directors (BOD) meeting. The BOD sought input from numerous stakeholders to develop the new 2025-2030 strategic plan, including residents, ABA diplomates, volunteers, and representatives from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, among others.
The ABA completed its last formal strategic planning process in 2011 and fulfilled the major objectives of that plan in 2018 following the launch of the staged exams process and MOCA 2.0 Those initiatives helped transform certification in meaningful ways, including the creation of MOCA Minute and the 2018 launch of the Objective Clinical Structured Examination (OSCE), the first of its kind within the ABMS community.
Using the seven strategic objectives outlined in our new strategic plan as guide posts, we’re looking forward to collaborating with the diplomate community to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology and shaping the future of our specialty.
Sincerely,
John E. Fiadjoe, M.D.
Secretary
