Article-Based MOCA Minute Pilot Now Live

We are pleased to share the launch of an 18-month pilot designed to introduce article-based questions into MOCA Minute to share new and relevant advancements in anesthesiology. Taking place July 2025 through December 2026, this pilot is in collaboration with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and will feature questions derived from recent articles published in “Anesthesiology,” ASA’s peer-reviewed flagship journal. Each article is selected by ASA “Anesthesiology” journal editors who identify articles that can inform questions that directly translate to relevant clinical practice.

Diplomates will receive access to three “Anesthesiology” articles via the ABA website at the start of each quarter. Up to three questions related to those articles will appear in the following quarter’s MOCA Minute. For example, articles shared in July 2025 will inform fall MOCA Minute questions starting Oct. 1, 2025. These questions will be scored and contribute to a diplomate’s MDT value, in the same way as all other MOCA Minute questions.

Article-based questions bring new knowledge into the assessment process earlier, encouraging critical thinking and supporting patient safety across clinical settings. Diplomates will continue to receive the same detailed, question-specific feedback for article-based questions as they do for all other MOCA Minute items.

This pilot reflects our broader strategic commitment to evolving the way we assess physician readiness. While maintaining a strong foundation in clinical knowledge remains essential, we recognize that hospitals and health systems increasingly expect physicians to demonstrate a broader set of competencies, including leadership, management and professionalism. By integrating current literature into our assessments, we’re not only reinforcing core knowledge but also fostering the kind of reflective, evidence-based thinking that supports these broader professional skills.
