American Board of Anesthesiology Contributes Expertise at ABMS Annual Meeting 2025

American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) thought leadership was on display at the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Annual Meeting 2025, where a dozen executives and staff presented on a range of topics designed to advance physician assessment and support improved healthcare outcomes for patients.

Throughout the four-day meeting, ABA representatives contributed to sessions on professionalism, physician engagement, longitudinal assessment, strategic planning and the future direction of examinations. The ABA also participated in the Research Poster Session, sharing findings that expand understanding of certification and assessment.

“Our participation at ABMS 2025 reflects the ABA’s ongoing commitment to embracing innovation to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology,” said Executive Director Michele Pore, MBA, CAE. “We appreciate the opportunity to exchange information and ideas within the ABMS community, where we are all dedicated to supporting physicians’ lifelong learning and assessment to foster high-quality patient care.”

ABA Research Poster Presentation

ABA Psychometricians Tianpeng Ye, Ph.D., and Ni Bei, Ph.D., presented research examining whether factors such as examiner-examinee gender pairing or examiner experience influence outcomes on the Standardized Oral Examination (SOE).

Drawing on data from thousands of examinees and examiners, the study applied advanced analysis to determine whether these factors affect exam fairness or scoring consistency. The results support the ABA’s mission to provide assessments that are rigorous, fair and reliable for all candidates.
