About
Setting standards and leading innovation for the practice of anesthesiology since 1938
As part of the ABA’s Strategic Plan, we are pleased to introduce new High Priority Topics Reports for Subspecialties, outlining the key areas that most consistently challenge board-certified anesthesiologists in subspecialty-specific continuing certification.
This initiative responds directly to a need identified by continuing medical education (CME) providers and subspecialty societies and supports our strategic goal of reimagining the future of assessments by sharing performance data with them. Circulating these insights among societies and CME partners directly connects assessment results with lifelong learning, bolstering the highest standard of expertise across subspecialties.
To develop the reports, the ABA assessments team analyzed aggregate 2025 MOCA Minute performance data and pinpointed the top 10 topics that posed the greatest level of difficulty within each subspecialty. Following psychometric review, volunteer subspecialty committees reviewed and validated the findings.
Access the 2025 reports below to inform your educational efforts:
These reports complement our MOCA Minute High Priority Topics Report published on a biannual basis, which informs CME more broadly with insights from all board-certified anesthesiologists’ continuing certification performance.

About the American Board of Anesthesiology:
The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) has served as the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, partnering with physicians to elevate the specialty. Our mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. We administer initial and subspecialty certification exams and the MOCA continuing certification program, which facilitates lifelong learning with a focus on quality and safety.
The ABA’s work extends far beyond assessment. We prioritize innovation, research, technology and programming that promote exceptional patient care and clinical outcomes. Our dedicated staff collaborates with more than 700 board-certified anesthesiologist volunteers who develop exam and MOCA content, inform policy, serve as examiners and provide critical feedback. Their contributions across numerous committees and task forces drive the ABA’s strategic progress and help shape the future of the specialty.
Based in Raleigh, NC, we are a nonprofit organization and a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).
