About
Setting standards and leading innovation for the practice of anesthesiology since 1938
A message from President Mark T. Keegan, M.B., B.Ch.
Happy Doctor’s Day! March 30* marks a landmark historical moment: the first procedure in anesthesiology, performed 183 years ago.
Join ABA President Mark T. Keegan, M.B., B.Ch., in honoring the indispensable role of anesthesiologists and all physicians who provide care for patients in their most vulnerable moments.
Thank you for all you do to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology.
* On this day in 1842, Dr. Crawford Williamson Long administered ether to James Venable in Jefferson, Georgia, removing a tumor from his neck in the first documented use of anesthesia to provide painless surgery. This procedure predated the famous 1846 anesthesia demonstration in 1846, which we now recognize as World Anesthesia Day each year on Oct. 16.
