Article-Based Questions

ABA introduces article-based MOCA Minute questions

We launched an 18-month pilot designed to introduce article-based questions into MOCA Minute to share new and relevant advancements in anesthesiology. Taking place July 2025 through December 2026, this pilot is in collaboration with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and will feature questions derived from recent articles published in “Anesthesiology,” ASA’s peer-reviewed flagship journal. Each article is selected by ASA “Anesthesiology” journal editors, who identify articles that can inform questions that directly translate to relevant clinical practice.

Access Articles

How it Works

Diplomates will receive access to three “Anesthesiology” articles at the start of each quarter. Up to three questions related to those articles will appear in the following quarter’s MOCA Minute.

For example, articles shared in July 2025 will inform up to three fall MOCA Minute questions, starting Oct. 1, 2025.

Winter: Jan. 1 – March 31
Spring: April 1 – June 30
Summer: July 1- Sept. 30
Fall: Oct. 1 – Dec. 31

Who is participating in this pilot?

All diplomates with an ABA certification could be presented with article-based MOCA Minute questions. Up to 12 article-based MOCA Minute questions, or three per quarter, will be included in diplomates’ 120 annual MOCA Minute questions.
Do these questions contribute to my MDT value?

These questions will be scored and will contribute to diplomates’ MDT value in the same way as all other MOCA Minute questions.
Will I receive feedback on article-based MOCA Minute questions?

Diplomates will receive the same question-specific feedback for the article-based questions similar to all MOCA Minute questions.
How can I access the articles?

ASA membership is not required to access the articles. We provide links to quarterly articles on this webpage, below, and in all MOCA Minute reminder emails. Not receiving our emails? Contact us at coms@theaba.org to be opted in.
When will I start seeing article-based questions in my MOCA Minute?

This 18-month pilot will run from July 2025 through December 2026. The first set of articles were released July 2025, and up to three questions from these articles will appear in fall MOCA Minute, starting Oct. 1.
What happens if I don't answer MOCA Minute questions in their intended quarter?

You will only be presented with article-based questions if answered in the intended MOCA Minute quarter. For example, if you begin answering MOCA Minute questions during Q2 (April 1-June 30), you will only be presented with article-based questions from the spring articles, released Jan. 1.
How will the articles be used in my MOCA Minute questions?

Reading the articles is optional, but they may help inform your answers to article-based MOCA Minute questions. The goal of this pilot program is to provide timely access to peer-reviewed research that reflects the latest clinical guidance.

Why article-based questions?

MOCA Minute was designed to assess knowledge retention and share new and relevant advancements in anesthesiology. Article-based MOCA Minute questions introduce new knowledge into assessment earlier to increase learning and demonstrate critical thinking skills, enhancing patient safety across clinical settings.
